Caregiving is difficult for everyone but it can take a particular emotional and financial toll on sons because they tend to keep things to themselves, don’t seek support, and feel uncomfortable providing personal care. “We don’t see many resources tailored to men, who end up feeling isolated,” says Jason Resendez, CEO of the National Alliance for Caregiving.

Americans in most states will turn their clocks back one hour on Sunday, Nov. 5, when daylight-saving time ends, which means the sun will set earlier. Less daylight can dampen our moods, disrupt our sleep and exercise patterns, and affect our appetite. While some people feel a little blue following the end of daylight-saving time, others experience a more serious Seasonal Affective Disorder, a seasonal depression that can impact mood, relationships and work.

A greater share of young adults say they believe in a higher power or God. About one-third of 18-to-25-year-olds say they believe—more than doubt—the existence of a higher power, up from about one-quarter in 2021, according to a recent survey of young adults. The findings, based on December polling, are part of an annual report on the state of religion and youth from the Springtide Research Institute, a nonpartisan nonprofit.

Older workers like Ms. Richards are helping fill a labor shortage in the home-care industry that worsened during the pandemic. They are taking personal-care, in-home help, or companionship positions with home-care agencies and other businesses that provide support to older adults.

The workload and division of responsibilities often create tensions between brothers and sisters. Arrangements work best when siblings can divvy up tasks that play to each other’s strengths. Even then, the stress of caring for parents and making financial decisions can cause rifts.
